The Hidden Airbnb Settings Nobody Told Me About
I’m convinced Airbnb hides features just to see if hosts can find them.
Nobody tells you about these things. You simply stumble across them after enough clicking, scrolling, and wondering, “Why is this harder than it needs to be?”
Reservation number two taught me that lesson.
By then, I had figured out the cleaning fee. Everything seemed to be running smoothly.
Then I received an invoice from our cleaner.
My first thought was:
“Wait a minute. Didn’t the guest already pay the cleaning fee?”
I checked the reservation.
Sure enough, the guest had been charged the cleaning fee.
So why was I getting the bill?
Another lesson learned.
Apparently, just because Airbnb collects the cleaning fee doesn’t mean Airbnb automatically sends that money to your cleaner.
You have to set up split payouts.
Nobody told me that.

There isn’t a giant button that says:
CLICK HERE SO YOU DON’T HAVE TO MANUALLY PAY YOUR CLEANER.
Nope.
You have to discover it.
After some clicking around, I finally found the payout settings and added our cleaner.
Problem solved.
Now Airbnb automatically sends her portion directly to her.
Honestly, it was one of those moments when I thought:
“Well, that would’ve been nice to know before reservation number two.”
Thankfully, this one didn’t create an embarrassing situation with the guest. It was simply another one of those quiet “Aha!” moments that seem to happen constantly when you’re learning how to host.
Another hidden setting.
Another lesson learned.
Another reminder that Airbnb seems to reward curiosity and punish assumptions.
And this particular discovery made my life a whole lot easier.
Now I don’t have to:
- Write checks.
- Send Venmo payments.
- Track cleaner invoices.
- Remember when the cleaner needs to be paid.
- Worry about the tax-reporting side of those payments.
Airbnb handles the payout and reporting process between the platform and the cleaner, which means one less administrative task for me to keep track of.
And honestly?
I’ll take it.
Apparently, There’s No Manual

At this point, I’m convinced there are hundreds of settings buried somewhere inside Airbnb that I haven’t discovered yet.
Maybe there’s a magical button that solves another problem I haven’t even encountered yet.
Maybe I’ll find it after reservation number five.
Or ten.
Or fifty.
And apparently, that’s just part of becoming an Airbnb host.
Nobody hands you the manual.
You just keep clicking until you figure it out.
And every time you discover one of those hidden little features, you think the same thing:
“Why didn’t anyone tell me this?”
Then you move on to the next thing.
Because apparently, that’s how we learn to host.
